When photographer Alicia Harrell started to feel excruciating hip pain in November 2016, she did what most people would do: She sought advice from her primary care physician, who recommended physical therapy. “I couldn’t even walk, so how could I do physical therapy?” she recalled. An MRI exam and x-ray all came back normal, but the pain persisted. A cortisone shot provided some relief, but it wasn’t until three months later that Alicia finally got a correct diagnosis: A torn labrum in her left hip. She was quickly scheduled for laparoscopic surgery, and was told the recovery would be about a week. “I had the surgery in January 2017, and I’m still recovering 10 months later!” Alicia said. “I wish someone had prepared me, but nobody ever told me what to expect.” Now Alicia has decided to donate her medical records to Our Breadcrumbs. “Information is power. Now my hope is to empower other patients so they know they have options.”

“There’s a big gap in medical care because doctors don’t have time to put all the pieces together. You can’t rely on just one person to have all the answers. It’s better to understand what other patients went through and let that inform your own care.”
